Install the field app

Before someone can use the field app, they need a Spine account and the app on their phone. During the beta, the app is an Android download your office shares with you. It isn’t in the App Store or Google Play yet, and the iPhone version isn’t part of the beta.

Who can do this

An Owner invites people and puts them on job crews. Anyone with a Spine account can install the app and sign in. The app needs an Android phone running Android 10 or later.

For the office: get your crew ready

1. Invite the person — An Owner invites them from Team with the Field role (or Staff, if they also work in the office). They accept the emailed invitation and choose a password. See Team and permissions.
2. Put them on a crew — Open each job they work on and add them to its crew. The field app only lists jobs they’re on. See Jobs and milestones.
3. Share the app — The Owner shares the Android app (an APK file) with a link, for example from Google Drive or Firebase App Distribution.
4. Tell them the server address — It’s the link your team opens Spine with on a computer, for example https://spine.yourbusiness.com.

On your phone: install the app

1. Open the link — Open the link your office sent on your Android phone and download the app.
2. Allow the install — Android may ask you to allow installs from the app you downloaded it with. Allow it, then press Install.
3. Open Spine — The Spine icon is on your home screen. The first time it opens you see a welcome screen: “Today’s jobs, in your pocket”. Press Get started to go to sign in.

Next, sign in on your phone.

Tip

The welcome screen shows once per phone. If you delete the app and install it again, you see it again.

Caution

Install only the file your office sends you. A newer beta installs over the old one, so you don’t need to delete the app first. See Update the field app.
