Tax

Spine works out tax on every line of a quote, invoice, credit note, vendor bill and expense, using the tax rates you set up for your country. It keeps what you collected from customers and what you paid to vendors in your books, so the figures for your return are ready when you need them. Spine prepares the numbers and files to upload. It never files a return or connects to a tax portal.

  • Tax rate. A named percentage, such as “VAT 20%” or “Sales Tax 8.875%”. Each rate has a tax type (for example VAT, GST, Sales tax, or CGST and SGST in India) so reports can split tax by kind.
  • Tax group. Several rates applied together as one choice on a line, for split taxes like CGST + SGST or a state surcharge on top of a sales tax.
  • One rate or one group per line. A line takes either a rate or a group, never both. Tax is worked out per line and rounded once, half-up.
  • Prices that include tax. You choose whether new lines treat the price as including tax or adding tax on top. Each line can change this.
  • Supply type. Why a line has no tax: zero-rated, exempt, or non-taxable (outside GST/VAT). Reports list these sales and purchases separately.
  • Issued documents keep their tax. Changing or archiving a rate never changes an issued invoice. Each line keeps the percentage it was issued with.
  • Tax Summary. The report of tax collected, tax paid and the net you owe for a period.
  • India GST. Your GSTIN and state, each customer’s GST treatment, the place of supply, HSN/SAC codes, GST invoices and a GSTR-1 file.

The Tax Summary is one of the Reports, and the dashboard’s Tax this period card is described in the Dashboard guide.
